The Rio Olympics

It was hard to watch the summer Olympics this year and not hear chatter about the next summer games host, Rio de Janiero, Brazil.  During the closing ceremony there was an official handover to Rio, with the mayor of London giving the Olympic flag to the mayor of Rio, amidst the fanfare and Spice Girls performance.

I've never been to Rio.  I don't really know much about it other than the basics; carnival, that big statue of Christ, Sugarloaf mountain, thongs and soccer.  I hear the beaches are lovely, but that could be a commentary more representative of Brazilian bikinis, than sand and sun.

I am sure the Brazilians are hard at work, building venues and making plans.  One would assume that blighted areas are set to be cleaned up a bit and other undesirable traits will be addressed before Rio is at the center of the world stage.

Rio is the capital city of the state of Rio de Janeiro, bordered to the north by the state of Minas Gerais.  Rio proper is probably about 100k from the state line.

Here is a picture of the 4 meter long pregnant anaconda that was recently captured in Minas Gerais.  Sane people would assume that the snake was destroyed (as my mom says, the only good snake is a dead snake) or taken to a zoo or some other containment facility.  Nope, they took her back out of town and let her go.

Make those Olympic travel plans early.
